Artist Notes

Dave Sim in the Note from the President Cerebus #120

"The original idea had been to do a Prologue that was all text about Jaka's earliest years. Try as I might to compress her childhood (mentally) into twenty pages of text and single illustrations (which had initially seemed like a lot of pages to fill) it just wasn't going to fit. I tried the first two pages. One tenth of the way through, she was out of bed and having a bath. It did not bode well for that...word that means intimidating but on a grander scale...climb to age twelve." link to NFTP from issue 120

Gerhard on the basis for the cover

"Rose and I had taken a trip up to Bruce Mines, which is up north of Lake Huron here in Ontario and I took a photo into the woods shooting into the light with all the trees back there or all the leaves backlit and all the trunks of the trees in silhouette basically – and that's sort of what I used as the basis for the wooded part." Annotations

  • Dave uses an interesting technique throughout Jaka's Story. He uses text next to a single panel of art for the extracts from Jaka's biography, and then his usual pages for actions in the "present."
  • This is the second issue of the series in which Cerebus does not appear. It last happened in issue 62, and will happen again.
