Issue Summary

Jaka has a dream wherein she reads Jaka's Story while a younger version of herself shows up with Missy. When she wakes up she realizes that Cerebus is alive and he loves her very much.

Swoon is still with Cirin in her dream and then Astoria appears. Astoria and Cirin get into a heated discussion that ends with Astoria repeatly punching Cirin in the face because according to Astoria it is a dream and in a dream you can do anything. Cirin turns into Suenteus Po who says "It's almost time, again..." and *poit* Astoria disappears.

In real life, bruises spontaneously appear on Cirin's face. Since the doctor is in the room while this happens, Generals Dworkin and Steinem say he is guilty of sorcery. Greer disagrees with them.

It starts to snow. Cerebus is floating a couple feet off his bed while sleeping. We see some text of the the real Cirin's trail by Serna (who now calls herself Cirin).

Lord Julius and Baskin are discussing Lord Julius' upcoming speech to the Joint Upper Felda and Iest Commission on Interest Rate Policy while Boobah transcribes the speech.

Annotations

  • Cover: The cover depicts Jaka sitting on the bench. At her feet is a painting depicting the setting of _Jaka's_Story_. A burnt-out candle is on the arm next to her, but is not visible there on page 2. (Alexx)
  • 1: "The maze would close itself off" Indeed, the central portion of the depicted maze is inaccessible. (Alexx)
  • 2: The child is, of course, Jaka herself, as a young girl. (Alexx)
  • 5: Note that, though Astoria hasn't moved, the two bishops have moved past her towards Cirin. (Alexx)
  • 6: The bishops crowd towards Cirin as, behind her, the two opposing queens grow larger and larger, squeezing Swoon between them. (Alexx)
  • 9: "that you propose to unite two male churches?" As suggested by General Steinem in (168, p.16). (Alexx)
  • 13-14: Sulk is a parody of the Sandman character Despair, another of the Endless. She appears as a dumpy, always naked woman. Her realm is 'on the other side of mirrors' (thus Sulk's appearance through one). Casting her as Mrs. Henrot-Gutch was inspired by a remark Neil Gaiman made to Dave Sim at a convention while he was working on this issue. (Alexx)
  • 20: "scotch" Is Astoria getting mental 'leakage' from Cerebus? (Alexx)
